The Lancet Sexual & reproductive health series

Starting on 4 November 2006, the British medical journal The Lancet published a series of papers and editorials on sexual and reproductive health. The main objective of this series – initiated and coordinated by HRP – is to advance evidence-based advocacy to put sexual and reproductive health stronger on the international public health agenda.

 Preprint version

The preprint versions of the papers are presented below.  The journal publications of these papers can be viewed on the Lancet website: www.thelancet.com

Six commissioned papers

1. The first paper presents a current global overview of sexual and reproductive health, describing what it is, why it is important, how it relates to poverty and development, and the impediments to achieving sound sexual and reproductive health worldwide. This paper is based on sound statistics and sets the scene for the rest of the series:

Glasier A, Gulmezoglu AM, Schmid G, Garcia Moreno C, Van Look PFA. Sexual and reproductive health: a matter of life and death. Lancet 2006.

Article 1 (13 pages - pdf 346 kb)

2-5. The next four papers cover, respectively, sexual behaviour, family planning, unsafe abortion and sexually transmitted infections:
Wellings K, Collumbien M, Slaymaker E, Singh S, Hodges Z, Patel D, Bajos N. Sexual behaviour in context: a global perspective. Lancet 2006.

Article 2  (21 pages - pdf 1,867 kb)

Cleland J, Bernstein S, Ezeh A, Faundes A, Glasier A, Innis J, Family planning: the unfinished agenda. Lancet 2006.

Article 3 (18 pages - 366 kb)

Grimes DA, Bensen J, Singh S, Romero M, Ganatra B, Okonofua FE, Shah IH. Unsafe abortion: the preventable pandemic. Lancet 2006.

Article 4 (13 pages - 249 kb)

Low N, Broutet N, Paz-Bailey G, Adu-Sarkodie Y, Barton P, Hawkes S. Global control of sexually transmitted infections. Lancet 2006.

Article 5 (16 pages - 274 kb)

6. The sixth and final paper is a call to action. It summarizes key arguments from the first five papers, sets the future agenda and discusses the accountability of those involved with the funding, planning and provision of sexual and reproductive health care. This paper also highlights the role of political, legal, social and cultural forces:
Fathalla MF, Sinding SW, Rosenfield A, Fathalla MMF. Sexual and reproductive health for all: a call for action. Lancet 2006.

Article 6 (6 pages - 189 kb)

Two commentaries

1. The first commentary discusses the lessons learnt since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD):
-
Langer A. Cairo after 12 years: successes, setbacks and challenges. Lancet 2006; published online Nov 1. DOI:10.1016/S0140-6736(06)69486-5.

2. The second commentary discusses the human rights aspects of sexual and reproductive health:

Shaw D. Sexual and reproductive health: whose rights and responsibilities? Lancet 2006; published online Nov 1. DOI:10.1016/S0140-6736(06)69487-7

With the generous support of several USA-based foundations, HRP has undertaken to disseminate the series widely. The dissemination effort begins with a press conference (to launch the series) on 30 October 2006 at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, United Kingdom. The papers and commentaries are bound in a special offprint set of The Lancet for distribution to governments, UN and other agencies, etc. Press events to draw attention to the series are planned at the Global Forum for Health Research Conference (29 October–2 November 2006) in Cairo, Egypt, and at the FIGO World Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (5–10 November 2006).
