Further research is clearly needed in this field – including research employing possible modelling with current field data. Recommendations for research, as well as guidelines for those carrying out programmes with periodic presumptive treatment, were formulated and are presented in the final section of this publication. National-level monitoring of the achievement of universal access to reproductive healthNational-level monitoring of the achievement of universal access to reproductive health
Conceptual and practical considerations and related indicators

For country programmes to measure and monitor the achievement of universal access, a set of indicators, that address the multiple components of sexual and reproductive health, is needed. The development of such a set of indicators requires the elucidation of the concept of “universal access to reproductive health” and its determinants – not only to measure the extent of the achievement of universal access, but also to plan and implement necessary interventions for its achievement. It is therefore critical to arrive at an operational definition of “universal access to reproductive health” and – based on that definition – to identify a set of indicators for monitoring progress. The global elimination of congenital syphilis: rationale and strategy for actionThe global elimination of congenital syphilis: rationale and strategy for action

The overarching global goal of the present strategy is the elimination of congenital syphilis as a public health problem. This would be achieved through reduction of prevalence of syphilis in pregnant women and by the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis. The strategy rests on four pillars: (i) ensure sustained political commitment and advocacy; (ii) increase access to, and quality of, maternal and newborn health services; (iii) screen and treat pregnant women and their partners; and (iv) establish surveillance, monitoring and evaluation systems. The Reproductive Health Library (RHL) No.11

The latest volume contains 137 Cochrane reviews on: sexual and reproductive health of adolescents; fertility regulation; gynaecology and related cancers; HIV and AIDS; infertility; newborn health; pregnancy and childbirth; and reproductive tract and sexually transmitted infections. In addition, for each Cochrane review there is at least one expert, peer-reviewed commentary, which includes a supplementary section entitled “Practical aspects”. RHL commentaries evaluate the findings of the Cochrane review, especially with respect to their significance for under-resourced settings. The practical aspects section present the evidence in the form of concrete actions for implementation. To help clinicians master specific details of complex interventions, RHL also includes short training videos. These and other contents make RHL one of the largest and most widely available sources of evidence-based clinical information on sexual and reproductive health for both developing and developed countries.
