This publication summarizes the deliberations of the technical consultation, which covered current knowledge on periodic presumptive treatment and experiences to date with interventions, including the conditions that seem to be the most favourable for such interventions to work well. Further research is clearly needed in this field – including research employing possible modelling with current field data. Recommendations for research, as well as guidelines for those carrying out programmes with periodic presumptive treatment, were formulated and are presented in the final section of this publication. For country programmes to measure and monitor the achievement of universal access, a set of indicators, that address the multiple components of sexual and reproductive health, is needed. The development of such a set of indicators requires the elucidation of the concept of “universal access to reproductive health” and its determinants – not only to measure the extent of the achievement of universal access, but also to plan and implement necessary interventions for its achievement. It is therefore critical to arrive at an operational definition of “universal access to reproductive health” and – based on that definition – to identify a set of indicators for monitoring progress. This training course is intended for in-service training for people responsible for STI management at any first-level health facility, such as a health centre, district hospital, mission hospital or STI clinic. The programme aims to equip all relevant clinicians and service
providers with the skills needed to manage STIs using the syndromic management
approach.
This guide explains how human rights related
to health are enshrined in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), governmental obligations to
implement those rights and monitoring of those obligations by the CEDAW
Committee. It concludes with suggestions for maximizing WHO’s use of the
CEDAW monitoring process.

This document, now in its fifth edition, presents global and regional
estimates of the incidence of unsafe abortion and associated mortality
in 2003. Globally, 20 million unsafe abortions are estimated to take
place each year, 19 million of these in developing countries. Each
year, 67 000 women die due to complications of unsafe abortion.
Maternal mortality ratio is the highest in Eastern Africa (160 per 100
000 live births).
The overarching global goal of the present strategy is the elimination
of congenital syphilis as a public health problem. This would be
achieved through reduction of prevalence of syphilis in pregnant women
and by the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis. The
strategy rests on four pillars: (i) ensure sustained political
commitment and advocacy; (ii) increase access to, and quality of, maternal
and newborn health services; (iii) screen and treat pregnant women and
their partners; and (iv) establish surveillance, monitoring and evaluation
systems. English |

The objective of this adaptable tool is to assess HIV and SRH bi-directional linkages at the policy, systems and service-delivery levels. Ii is intended also to identify gaps, and ultimately contribute to the development of country-specific action plans to forge and strengthen these linkages. While this tool focuses primarily on the health sector it can be adapted to cover other sectors (education, social services, and labour). 88 pages (pdf 798 kb)
The 2005 estimates of maternal mortality provide an up-to-date indication of the extent of the maternal mortality problem globally and its evolution since 1990. They strongly indicate a need for both, improved action for maternal mortality reduction and increased efforts for the generation of robust data to provide better estimates in the future. The latest volume contains 137 Cochrane reviews on:
sexual and reproductive health of adolescents; fertility regulation;
gynaecology and related cancers; HIV and AIDS; infertility; newborn
health; pregnancy and childbirth; and reproductive tract and
sexually transmitted infections. In addition, for each Cochrane
review there is at least one expert, peer-reviewed commentary, which
includes a supplementary section entitled “Practical aspects”. RHL
commentaries evaluate the findings of the Cochrane review,
especially with respect to their significance for under-resourced
settings. The practical aspects section present the evidence in the
form of concrete actions for implementation. To help clinicians
master specific details of complex interventions, RHL also includes
short training videos. These and other contents make RHL one of the
largest and most widely available sources of evidence-based clinical
information on sexual and reproductive health for both developing
and developed countries.

Linking Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS
The importance of linking sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV is
widely recognized. The international community agrees that the Millennium
Development Goals will not be achieved without ensuring universal access
to SRH and HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.
